Paul Lauterbur: An American chemist who developed a mechanism to add spatial gradients to magnetic fields, publishing the first 2D magnetic resonance image (of two tubes of water) in 1973. He shared the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this work.
Sir Peter Mansfield: A British physicist who developed mathematical techniques for rapid gradient scanning and slice selection, producing the first image of a human body part (a finger) in the 1970s. He shared the 2003 Nobel Prize with Lauterbur.
Raymond Damadian: An American physician who discovered that cancerous tissues have different nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation times than healthy tissues. He filed the world's first MRI patent in 1972 and built "Indomitable," the first full-body human MRI scanner, in 1977. His exclusion from the 2003 Nobel Prize remains a notable controversy
